Simple Practices To Connect With Your Nervous System

Connect with your nervous system stages
Your stress response is brilliantly designed to keep you safe. Your nervous system efficiently responds to any and all danger it perceives. However, it hasn't really changed much since our caveman days, so our bodies can't tell the difference between a real tiger and a tricky email.
You may have already heard of the two branches that make up our autonomic nervous system: fight or flight (sympathetic) & rest and digest (parasympathetic). However, each of those branches can show up in a healthy or unhealthy way in your body. This makes up your 4 stress stages.

Healthy Parasympathetic: Calm & Relaxed.
You feel safe, your mind is clear, and you can truly switch off. It's your body's space to relax and recharge.
Healthy Sympathetic: Energised & Focused.
You feel motivated, ready to tackle tasks, and have that healthy buzz that helps you get things done. It's your body's way of giving you the drive to achieve.
Unhealthy Sympathetic: Stressed & Reactive.
You're feeling stressed and on edge. It's your body's way of sounding the alarm, but it leaves you feeling reactive and unable to think clearly.
Unhealthy Parasympathetic: Numb & Overwhelmed.
You might feel disconnected, flat, or just completely shut down. It's your body's way of trying to protect itself, but it leaves you feeling stuck.
There's no single 'right' stage to be in. A regulated nervous system moves fluidly down and up these stress stages, always adjusting based on what it perceives as danger or safety.
This means to live a less stressful life, you need to build an awareness of your unique danger signals, understand why they show up, and gently shift them. That, along with tending to your emotions and strengthening your toolkit of safety signals, can have a real lasting change, helping you to feel back in control.
It’s a challenge we all face, and one where I can support.
